Design is Everywhere

Design is designing itself into smarter form. The bulky size of the first computer and big television set that could occupy quarter of your living room has been reduced to the slimmest of the laptops and thinnest of the LEDs. Design is everywhere in our lives, perhaps most importantly in the places where we’ve just stopped noticing. The important thing is that design is not just something that shows up in a product at the end of the production process -- it's something that is thoroughly baked into our culture, lifestyle and is around every corner.

Design is an integrative process that constantly evolves and brings new ideas into execution for the equitable use of all. However, the word is defined unconventionally; every design is a module that has a rational meaning and a history behind it.

We say “need is the mother of invention”; relating it with designing, we can say it is an intent of producing a product that leads us to follow the process. Realization of the process of design germinated as early as mankind; rather the evolution of homo-sapiens is a natural design with complex form of genetics coming into play. Shielding of human body and creating a habitat was an intent, which led primitive era to design special clothing and shelter optimizing the rawest form of naturally available resources. Intent is followed by the idea that helps in allowing the process of visualization of the product with innovativeness, uniqueness and differentiability.

Constant changes in our lives demand adoption of new ideas and trends; often this leads to customization or invention of new methods.  Each one of us improvises in our own ways as we go along. Good, bad or ugly, design is a tune each one of us sings. It is amply demonstrated.

-For a Social cause -In the unique manner in which the Egyptians used utensils, buckets and rugs to create a makeshift mask to protect themselves from tear gas.

- In Urbanization - Rapid progress of JANMARG (BRTS) in Ahmedabad and Delhi Metro rail project which boosted the public transport and eased the travelling woes of residents of the two cities. Designing involves and attaches itself to the social aspects and concerns above everything.

-In Technology - It’s in the page you are reading right now. This is enabled by GUI, also known as Graphical User Interface, is not as complex as one might expect. It is the digital platform that enables us to interact with the huge amounts of data and information that is available on the web or on a machine.

-In Retail, the production of consumer goods, their packaging and industrial products are becoming smarter and exceeding our expectations of value for money.

Each of these and many more were invented because there was need. This problem solving activity is design. And, we see design everywhere. Ranging from the most comfortable couch to the toilet seat, the longest bridge to the shortest pavement, the tallest tower to the smallest hut, the expensive platter to the cheapest roadside dish, the diary page to a graffiti wall, are all forms of design. Design is omnipresent.

Design should be creative, aesthetical, consequent, execution-able, positive, and tolerant but above all, it should be useful and feasible. Innovativeness is uncompromised and integrated part of design.

Entire universe and the solar system have evolved into such a design that humans are the most diversified form of life along with the numerous creatures that constitute to the world. Think of any other design for Earth and the composition of the globe, and then think- isn’t design everywhere?
